Chennai’s dessert culture has changed dramatically in the past three years. The city that was once dominated by traditional sweets and ice cream parlours now has a thriving modern dessert scene, and waffles have become one of the fastest-growing categories. Here is what the Chennai waffle scene looks like in 2026.

Chennai’s Growing Appetite for Waffles

The growth is being driven by two demographics. First, the enormous IT and tech workforce concentrated along OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road), Sholinganallur, and Perungudi — young professionals who have travelled widely or grown up with exposure to international food formats through Instagram and food delivery apps. Second, Chennai’s large college population across areas like Guindy, Tambaram, and Chromepet — students who eat out frequently and build strong loyalty to dessert brands that deliver a consistently good experience.

Where to Find Waffles in Chennai

Express Avenue Mall and Phoenix Marketcity are the two premium waffle destinations in central Chennai, with multiple dessert brands operating in their food courts. For neighbourhood-level options, Anna Nagar 2nd Avenue and T. Nagar are the strongest high-street dessert corridors. On OMR, the stretch from Perungudi to Sholinganallur has seen significant food and cafe growth in 2025–2026 with several new dessert-focused concepts opening.

For late-night waffles specifically, the ECR (East Coast Road) stretch from Thiruvanmiyur to Besant Nagar has a strong evening food culture with several spots open past midnight. The Chennai beach food corridor also sees significant late-night footfall, particularly on weekends.

The Eggless Factor in Chennai

Chennai has one of the highest vegetarian populations of any major Indian city. This makes the eggless waffle positioning particularly relevant here. Many waffle brands operating in Chennai use egg in their batter, which limits their addressable market. A 100% eggless waffle option that does not compromise on taste or texture is a genuine gap in the Chennai market in 2026.

The Maple Waffle Coming to Chennai

The Maple Waffle is launching in Chennai in 2026 with its full menu of American chef-designed, 100% eggless waffles. The brand has operated successfully in Coimbatore and Salem and is bringing the same recipe quality, late-night availability, and product consistency to Chennai. Locations are being finalised and franchise partners are being onboarded currently.

What to Order When You Visit

In Chennai, the Mango Cheesecake waffle is almost universally the bestseller — the mango flavour profile resonates deeply with Tamil Nadu customers. Lotus Biscoff waffles are the premium order for anyone wanting something indulgent. For a classic, the Double Chocolate waffle with a milkshake is the go-to combination for most first-time visitors.
